As your puppy goes into their adolescence stage, from 6-7 months through to 18-24 months (longer for larger breeds) they are still experiencing further developmental changes in their body, their brains are still developing and their body is undergoing lots of hormonal changes.
Adolescence can be a testing time, where it's very important to continue teaching your dog appropriate behaviours and social skills like you have been during puppyhood.
During their adolescence stage you may see:
Your relationship is not as strong as it was
They have an increased interest in others around them
Their response to behaviours is not as strong as it was
Inappropriate behaviours like pulling more on the lead, barking at other dogs or people
Like they have selective hearing or they are not listening to your cues
Overly distracted and enticed by the world around them
Keeping on top of managing your dog's behaviour, setting them up for success and continuing to build your relationship is crucial.
Use of punishment and corrections will only serve to make their behaviour worse. Instead of becoming frustrated, it's important to focus on what you CAN DO to help your dog.
Our Contented Adolescence Course has been put together especially for this stage of your dog's life, to help you achieve your dream relationship with your dog and be proud to take them anywhere with you.
Never fear! You'll get through this stage with a smile.
